Be Smart: Improve Your Vocabulary

17 Dec, 2018

  1. the body of words used in a particular language.

Did you know the more words that you know, the smarter you will be? Studies recognise the links between vocabulary and intelligence. Deep thoughts are limited by the words that you know so the greater your vocabulary, the more you’ll be able to understand what you are thinking and feeling. This means the more extensive your vocabulary is, the better you’ll be able to understand your thoughts and communicate your ideas to others.

Research also suggests that vocabulary growth is directly related to school achievement. It improves all areas of communication which is critical to a student’s success in school and having an expansive library of words also means you’ll be faster at learning due to developed word comprehension. This word knowledge will assist with reading, writing and speaking, all of which are necessary skills in a school environment.

So how can you grow your vocabulary to reap the benefits mentioned above? Developing your vocabulary is a lifelong process of learning and will never be fully mastered, however, there are two methods that will help you improve your word knowledge - direct and indirect learning.

1. Direct learning

Direct learning is when a student deliberately learns words through a planned strategy of learning (think school classes). A conscious effort is made to learn and comprehend specific words in a structured format.

2. Indirect learning

Indirect learning happens naturally when a student is exposed to new and unfamiliar words through everyday situations such as talking to other people or reading new books.

In conclusion, improving your vocabulary will make you smarter and improve your communication skills. The more words you know, the easier it will be to understand and communicate your thoughts and ideas which will ultimately improve your chances of success at school, work and and other opportunities in life. So what are you waiting for - be smart and improve your vocabulary.
